How it's calculated

a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) / bd
a/b × c/d = ac / bd
a/b ÷ c/d = ad / bc

The result is reduced by the greatest common factor of the top and bottom. Mixed numbers like 1 1/2 are read as one and a half.

    About the Fraction calculator

This fraction calculator adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides fractions and mixed numbers, then gives the answer three ways: as a simplified fraction, as a mixed number and as a decimal. Type fractions the way you would write them, like 3/4 or 1 1/2, and the result is reduced by the greatest common factor so you never have to simplify by hand. It is useful for homework, recipes, measurements and checking your own working, because the steps show the common denominator and how the answer was reduced. For a fraction made of other fractions, use the complex fraction calculator; to find the greatest common factor on its own, use the GCF calculator.

    How to use it

    1. Type the “First fraction”, for example 3/4, or a mixed number like 1 1/2.
    2. Choose the “Operation”: +, −, × or ÷.
    3. Type the “Second fraction”.
    4. Read the simplified fraction, the mixed number and the decimal; the steps show the common denominator and the simplification.

    Worked example

    3/4 + 5/6: the common denominator is 12, so 9/12 + 10/12 = 19/12, which is the mixed number 1 7/12, or about 1.583 as a decimal. Multiplying 1 1/2 by 2/3 gives 3/2 × 2/3 = 6/6 = 1.

    Questions people ask

How do I add fractions with different denominators?

Rewrite both fractions over a common denominator, add the numerators, then simplify. For a/b + c/d the result is (ad + bc) ÷ bd before reducing.

    How do you divide fractions?

    Multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second: a/b ÷ c/d = ad ÷ bc. So 2/5 ÷ 1/3 is 2/5 × 3/1 = 6/5.

How do I enter a mixed number?

Type the whole number, a space, then the fraction, like 1 1/2 for one and a half. A minus sign in front, as in −1 1/2, makes the whole mixed number negative.

    How is the answer simplified?

The numerator and denominator are both divided by their greatest common factor, so 6/8 becomes 3/4 and 19/12 stays as it is.

Why can't I divide by zero?

Dividing by a fraction equal to zero has no answer, so the calculator stops and tells you rather than showing a wrong result.
